Although being a producer wasn't something I'd ever really aspired to, over the years I found myself doing a bit of it here and there. When I ran Kings Lane Studio (81-89) I found myself not only engineering demos for bands and singers, but often as not producing them as well. If they became stuck for ideas or couldn't agree on a way forward I could usually come up with an angle. I would sometimes record up to seven different acts a week, especially in the early days when I was the only engineer. If people left the studio with their song sounding better than they thought it would when they came in, I considered it a successful session. Incredibly it usually did work that way with only a few notable exceptions. It meant that I built up a number of tricks or techniques for getting performances out of people in a short time. I've been fortunate enough to have worked with some of the best producers in the world. People like Joe Wissert, David Tickle, Charles Fisher and Maurice Jarre. I was able to experience their unique approaches and at very least appreciate what the job involved. What I found they had most in common was the way they approached the music with an almost child-like curiosity, wonder even. It obviously gets results. |
