For over thirty years I have been a silk painter. In my opinion, to paint on silk is one of the most intriguing and fascinating things to do. It is one of my great passions.

 Having been interested in art for most of my life, I have ‘dabbled’ in numerous areas of art and craft but have always chosen to work with silk as my preferred medium. I am drawn in by the beauty of this natural and versatile material with its translucence and lustrous sheen. The vibrance of the silk dyes transforms this magical fabric into a brilliant kaleidoscope of colours while at the same time mesmerising the senses as the dyes chase, play and intermingle with one another leaving me transfixed as the medium gains control, guiding me, the artist. It’s almost as if the silk and I share an intimate dialogue.

I quite often begin a painting unplanned just to see where it will take me. I so enjoy the unpredictability of the experience. I am frequently led to an underwater scene most likely because of the gentle movement of the silk, the special effects of the dyes reacting together and because I have a diving background.

Everyone leaves behind them some kind of mark. I am intrigued by the great variety of ways in which I can make my mark on silk. With each new skill I learn or experiment I try, I find it can be applied to the silk. I constantly search for new and unconventional ways to work with silk and liken it to Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates….'you never know what you’re gonna get.'
